Child development from ages 0-8 is a critical period of rapid brain, physical, and emotional growth, categorized into five key stages: newborn, infant, toddler, preschool, and school-age. Key milestones include developing motor skills, language, social-emotional regulation, and cognitive abilities like problem-solving. Development is shaped by nurturing environments, relationships, and play. Communication during this time builds for the future.

This time is also a good time for parents to do an assessment of their own comfort level when talking about these topics. Parents can examine their talks they had with their parents and their own relationship history to understand their knowledge and comfort level.

Children are curious and ask questions during this time. Create an environment where they feel safe to ask questions.

Communication Tips

  • Acknowledge their curiosity and find out what they know or want to know.
  • Give facts at their developmental level.
  • Use correct names for body parts.
  • Use the opportunity to share thoughts and feelings.
  • Understand that your children might have questions about their body or where babies come from.
  • “I don’t know” can be a good answer, but make sure you get back to them when you have the answer
