Child development between ages 8 and 12 (the “tweens”) is marked by the onset of puberty, increased independence, and a shift toward peer-focused, social lives. Physically, children experience rapid growth, while cognitively they move from concrete to more abstract, logical thinking such as understanding actions can cause future consequences. Emotionally, they have a strong desire to fit in with their peers and develop a stronger sense of what is right or wrong.

Communication during this time builds for the future.

    Communication Tips

      • It’s important for children to get reliable information about sex and their changing bodies from their parents.
      • Send the message that sex and sexuality are healthy parts of life.
      • Children this age are curious and may want to know about topics like reproduction.
      • Acknowledge their curiosity and find out what they know or want to know.
      • Give facts at their developmental level.
      • Use correct names for body parts.
      • Use the opportunity to share thoughts and feelings.
      • “I don’t know” can be a good answer, but make sure you get back to them when you have the answer.
      • Don’t wait for them to bring it up. Start conversations with open-ended questions.
