Child development between 13 and 18 years (adolescence) is characterized by rapid physical growth, the shift from concrete to abstract thinking, and a drive for independence, with a strong focus on peer relationships over family. Key milestones include puberty, identity formation, development of moral reasoning, and increasing ability to plan for the future.

Parents are the single largest influence on their adolescents’ decisions about sex, and parents underestimate the impact they have on their decisions.

Communication during this time builds for the future.

    Communication tips

      • It’s important for teens to get reliable information about sex and reproduction.
      • Send the message that sex and sexuality are healthy parts of life.
      • Be direct.
      • Provide education about protection from STIs and pregnancy prevention.
      • Explain what a healthy relationship is vs an unhealthy relationship.
      • Discuss consent.
      • Use the opportunity to share thoughts and feelings.
      • Reassure your teen that you are available even if they think they will be in trouble.
      • “I don’t know” can be a good answer, but make sure you get back to them when you have the answer.
      • Don’t wait for them to bring it up. Start conversations with open-ended questions.
